Book Review
"Horsekeeping on a Small Acreage; Designing and Managing Your Equine Facilites" by Cherry Hill
Hill's book offers plenty of practical advice, and is filled with color photographs and useful plans. In an easy to browse format, she covers topics from general site layout to manure management.
The chapter on fencing, for example, offers clear photographs of different fence options, installation diagrams, and a table that lists post materials and expected longevity.
Often neglected in similar books, there is a chapter on farm equipment, including information on tractors, implements, and safety.
Whether you're an experienced horse person or new to rural living, this book has something to offer to you.

Seasonal Tips
Who would have thought storm water control could be so beautiful?
If you don't like the look of a standard grate near your home, garden, or barn, check out these decorative cast iron grates made from recycled engine blocks. Custom grates are also available.
You can order them through Shelton Pipe in Morgan Hill. Tip: Make sure that the grate you choose is "traffic-rated" if you might drive over it or think a horse could have access to the area.

There's still time to prepare this year's grading projects for winter rains...
Find a local source for erosion control blankets or straw wattles to help stabilize soil disturbed by summer and fall construction projects.
Rice straw and jute netting can also hold soil in place while seeds have a chance to grow and develop healthy root systems.
Straw wattles are useful on slopes and around storm drains, catching silt before it migrates on towards waterways. They are easy to install, and are light enough to carry to remote areas of your property.
